Coil Dimensions and Weight to Length Conversion

Buyers order coil by weight but consume it by length, so the conversion drives both purchasing and press planning. Length in metres equals the coil weight in kilograms divided by the width in metres multiplied by the thickness in millimetres multiplied by 8.0.

Heating Coils and Coil Tubing Are a Different Product

Searches for a stainless steel coil for heating, a hot tub coil or coil tubing for a heat exchanger are looking for coiled tube, not flat-rolled coil. That product is supplied from our pipe and tube range, normally as 316L seamless tube coiled to a specified diameter, and our note on half-coiled tubes covers the heat transfer version. To quote we need the grade, thickness, width, finish, coil weight and inside diameter, total tonnage and destination port. Tell us the downstream operation as well, because a coil destined for deep drawing is better ordered in 2D and one destined for a visible panel in BA.

FAQs

What are stainless steel coils used for?
Flat-rolled coil is the feedstock for almost every formed stainless product. It is slit into strip for tube mills and profile lines, cut to length into sheet and blanks, roll formed into panels and sections, and fed directly into presses for appliance housings, sinks, exhaust components and catering equipment. Buying in coil rather than sheet is cheaper per tonne and removes offcut waste when the part is produced in volume.
How much does a coil of stainless steel cost?
Coil is priced per tonne against the current nickel, chromium and molybdenum alloy surcharge, then adjusted for grade, thickness, width, finish and total tonnage. A 3 t coil of 1 mm 304 in 2B therefore has no standing list price. Send the grade, dimensions, finish and tonnage with your destination port and we return a quotation with a stated validity window; our monthly price commentary tracks the underlying inputs.
What is the price of a 304 stainless steel coil?
304 carries roughly 8 percent nickel, so its price follows the LME nickel curve more closely than any other input. Thinner gauges cost more per tonne because of the extra cold rolling passes, and BA or No.4 finishes add a further processing charge over 2B. For a firm figure we need thickness, width, finish, coil weight and quantity.
How much money is a steel coil worth?
It depends entirely on grade and weight. A 5 t coil of 430, which contains no nickel, and a 5 t coil of 316L, which contains both nickel and molybdenum, can differ by a factor of two at the same dimensions. Because the alloy surcharge is reset frequently, coil value is quoted at the time of order rather than held on a price list.
What thickness and width can you supply?
From 0.2 mm to 6.0 mm thick, in widths from 20 mm slit strip up to 1,500 mm master coil. Coil inside diameter is 508 mm or 610 mm, and we can recoil to a specific coil weight so the load matches your decoiler and crane capacity.
Can you slit coil to width and cut it into sheet?
Yes. We slit from 20 mm upward with deburred edges, level to 0.1 mm per square metre where flatness is critical, and cut to length into standard or custom sheet sizes. Having it done at our end usually costs less than the scrap and handling it saves you.
Which finish should I order for a part that will be formed?
For deep drawing, 2D is preferred because the matte surface holds lubricant and reduces galling. For general pressing and fabrication, 2B is the standard. For a visible finished surface, order BA or No.4 with protective PVC film, and plan the tooling to avoid contact with the finished face.
Do you supply mill test certificates with coil?
Yes. Every coil ships with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate carrying the heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical test results, traceable to the melt. Third-party inspection by SGS or an equivalent body can be arranged before loading.
