Coil polished or bright annealed at the mill costs less per tonne than sheet polished afterwards, which is why volume decorative work is bought in coil and cut down. Polished coil is supplied with PVC film applied on the line.

Cold rolled coil carries internal stress from rolling and coiling, and it will not lie flat when uncoiled unless it is levelled. What a Coil Is and Why Buy One

A coil is a single continuous length of strip or sheet wound onto itself, typically several hundred metres long. Buying coil rather than sheet changes three things:

  • Yield. A cut-to-length line takes exactly the lengths you need from one continuous strip, so the offcut is limited to the head and tail of the coil rather than the trim on every sheet.
  • Line feeding. Presses, roll formers, tube mills and slitting lines all run from coil. Sheet cannot feed them.
  • Price per tonne. Coil is the mill's native output. Every subsequent operation, slitting, levelling and cutting, adds cost, so coil is the cheapest form of flat stainless per tonne.

The trade-off is handling: a coil needs a crane, a decoiler and the space to run it, and once it is on your floor you have committed to the whole weight. Where volumes are modest, buying sheet or slit strip is more practical even at a higher rate.

Coil weight per metre equals width in metres multiplied by thickness in millimetres multiplied by 8.0. Inverting that gives the length in a tonne, which is the figure to plan production against.

What Determines the Price

Coil is priced per tonne on a base price plus alloy surcharges for nickel and chromium, which reset frequently and account for most of the movement between quotations. Around 8 percent of 304 is nickel, so the nickel market drives the figure. On top of that:

  • Thickness. Thinner gauges cost more per tonne, since each pass of cold rolling adds work. Below 0.5 mm the premium is significant.
  • Width. Standard widths of 1,219 and 1,500 mm are the cheapest; non-standard widths mean slitting and yield loss.
  • Finish. 2B is the baseline. BA, No.4 and mirror each add a processing charge, and mirror can add 40 percent or more.
  • Quantity and coil weight. Full-weight coils in stock sizes carry the lowest rate.
  • Grade. 304 is the reference. 430 is well below it, 316L is 25 to 40 percent above.

What is a stainless steel coil?
It is a single continuous length of flat stainless steel wound onto itself, typically several hundred metres long and weighing from 500 kg to 5 tonnes. Coil is the mill's native output, and it is the form used to feed presses, roll formers, tube mills, slitting lines and cut-to-length lines. Because every operation after coiling adds cost, coil is the cheapest form of flat stainless per tonne, and it produces less offcut than buying sheet since lengths are cut exactly as needed from the continuous strip.
What is the price of a 304 stainless steel coil?
Coil is quoted per tonne against a base price plus live nickel and chromium surcharges, which reset frequently and drive most of the variation. On top of the alloy cost, thinner gauges carry a premium because of the additional cold rolling passes, non-standard widths add slitting and yield loss, and BA, No.4 and mirror finishes each add a processing charge. How much does a coil of stainless steel cost?
The total depends on the weight far more than on anything else, since pricing is per tonne. A 3 tonne coil at 1.0 mm and 1,219 mm wide holds about 308 metres, which is a useful sanity check when comparing quotations: work out the metres you need, convert to weight using width times thickness times 8.0, and apply the per-tonne figure. Grade shifts the total substantially, with 430 well below 304 and 316L 25 to 40 percent above it.
What are the disadvantages of 304 stainless steel?
It pits and tea stains in chloride environments, so it should not be used in coastal exposure, pool halls or on de-iced roads, where 316L is required. Its 205 MPa yield strength is low for structural work. It work hardens rapidly, which means more press capacity, greater springback and difficult machining. Its thermal expansion is a third higher than carbon steel, so welded assemblies distort more. And its price is fully exposed to the nickel market, which is why 430 and 201 exist as lower-cost alternatives for dry indoor work.
How many sheets will a coil produce?
Divide the coil length by the sheet length and allow for head and tail trim. A 3 tonne coil of 1.0 mm material at 1,219 mm wide holds about 308 metres, which gives roughly 126 sheets at 2,438 mm long, or about 152 sheets at 2,000 mm. The advantage over buying sheet is that lengths can be anything you specify rather than a standard size, so the nesting on your parts governs the cut list rather than the reverse.
Do I need the coil levelled?
Almost certainly, if the material will be laser cut, formed to a tight tolerance, or used as a visible flat panel. Cold rolled coil holds internal stress from rolling and winding, so it exhibits coil set and often edge wave, and it will not lie flat when uncoiled. Tension levelling to 0.1 mm per square metre removes it. For material going straight into a press or roll former, where the tooling controls shape, levelling is usually unnecessary.
Should I order 304 or 304L coil?
304L wherever the finished part will be welded in a thickness above about 6 mm and not solution annealed afterwards, because its 0.030 percent carbon ceiling prevents sensitisation in the heat-affected zone. For thin-gauge coil under 3 mm, which covers most cold rolled production, standard 304 is normally fine and gives 35 MPa more yield strength. A great deal of stock is dual certified to both, which resolves the question at no extra cost.
